Introduction to Commedia dell’Arte!!!

This style of comic theater was very popular in the late Sixteenth century. Originated by the Italians, these plays were improvised by the actors, used stock characters, consistent costumes, half face leather masks, and very flexible storylines. Along with the humanizing of so much art, the Italian Renaissance saw stories of regular people used for great entertainment via Commedia. Women became actors, troupes became reliable businesses, and people could make a real profession of this art.

In this class, you’ll hear about the birth of Commedia, how it became so popular, and how you can try doing some of it yourself! You can try on masks, pick a character, and play a few scenes at the end of class! Free to all comers!
